When it comes to family vacations, creating a balance between adventure, relaxation, and bonding time can be tricky, but with the right planning, it can be magical. Our recent family trip to Negril, Jamaica, was the perfect mix of all three, and we’re here to share our itinerary for anyone looking to plan a similar getaway. Whether you’re a military family like us, traveling with teenagers, or just want to enjoy a tropical escape, this guide will help you make the most of your time. All direct booking links below.

Our vacation fell in February, a perfect month to escape the winter cold and enjoy Jamaica’s warm, inviting climate. It’s ideal for combining a Valentine’s Day celebration with some family fun, and if you’re a sports fan, the timing overlaps with the Super Bowl! Imagine watching the big game with a tropical breeze and a cocktail in hand!

Day 1: Arrival and Settling In at Hotel Riu Negril 5*
After a smooth flight, we arrived at the beautiful Hotel Riu Negril, a 5-star resort that would be our home for the next week. From the moment we stepped into the lobby, we were surrounded by warm hospitality and gorgeous views of the Caribbean Sea. The resort itself is perfect for families, offering a wide range of amenities, pools, and entertainment options.
After checking in, we took a leisurely stroll around the property to explore the various pools, beach areas, and entertainment facilities. The hotel is known for its lively atmosphere, with daily activities for all ages, so there’s never a dull moment!
Morning: Resort Relaxation
Our first full day in paradise started with enjoying the resort’s offerings. From the break of dawn, we indulged in a laid-back morning, sipping coffee on our balcony overlooking the ocean. Afterward, we headed down to the pool to soak up the sun. For the more energetic family members, the resort offered water aerobics and beach volleyball, while others in our group opted for lounging on the beach.

Lunchtime: Private Snorkeling Excursion & Lobster Feast
After a relaxing morning, it was time for some adventure. We had pre-arranged a private boat tour that picked us up right at the resort’s beach. The highlight of our trip was snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters. Our kids loved spotting colorful fish and coral, while we adults marveled at the serenity of being out on the water. After snorkeling, the boat crew prepared a delicious lobster feast right on board—a perfect mix of adventure and gourmet dining. We personally used Captain Jace Allen Glass Bottom Tours and it was fantastic!

Dinner: Resort Restaurant Delights
By the time we returned, we were ready for a delicious dinner. The Riu Negril has multiple dining options, and we chose the buffet for a relaxed evening meal. There’s plenty for picky eaters and adventurous foodies alike, from Jamaican jerk chicken to classic pasta dishes. We enjoyed dining outdoors, letting the sounds of the evening entertainment fill the air.
Day 2: Adventure & Romance
Morning: Spa Day for Mom and Daughter
The second day began with some well-deserved relaxation. The spa at the hotel offers a wide variety of treatments, and I treated myself and my daughter to a mother-daughter massage. It was a peaceful experience and a great bonding moment, something I’d recommend to any parent looking to carve out a little “us” time amidst the family fun.

Lunchtime: Exploring Negril
After our morning pampering, the whole family set out for a brief exploration of Negril. The local town is charming, with shops full of handcrafted souvenirs and friendly locals eager to share their culture. We stopped by a beachfront café for lunch, sampling some authentic Jamaican cuisine before heading back to the resort.
Evening: Romantic Dinner for Two
After a day full of family adventures, my husband and I had the chance to steal away for a romantic dinner at one of the resort’s a la carte restaurants. He booked us a reservation at The Cove which has amazing views and good vibes. The setting was perfect—a candlelit table overlooking the ocean, the waves providing the perfect soundtrack for a memorable evening. Meanwhile, the kids enjoyed their own night of fun at the resort’s teen entertainment events.

Day 3: Super Bowl Sunday & More Fun in the Sun
Since we visited in February, we couldn’t miss out on the Super Bowl! The resort went all out, setting up a large outdoor viewing area with plenty of snacks and drinks. It was a unique experience to enjoy the game in such a tropical setting, surrounded by other families who were just as excited.
When the game was over, we wrapped up the day with a final family dinner, recounting our favorite moments from the trip.
This family trip to Negril was the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable moments. Whether you’re planning to escape for Valentine’s Day, enjoy some downtime after a busy holiday season, or want to experience a tropical paradise, Negril offers it all. From snorkeling in clear waters to indulging in gourmet food, there’s something for everyone. Plus, the Hotel Riu Negril makes it easy to keep every family member entertained and happy throughout the stay.
